"I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it."
--Maya Angelou
My Journey Here
I grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Maui, Hawaii. I was raised not only by family and community, but also by the wide open spaces, a rugged ocean, lush gardens, animals, and art. My upbringing reinforced the healing power of connection and the exhilaration of adventure and the unknown.
I eventually left Maui to explore numerous other cultures and countries backpacking and on my bike. I then continued my formal education, earning a BA in Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a MA in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Art Therapy from Naropa University. Naropa offered the opportunity to study and practice an approach to psychology that emphasized working with a person holistically.
In addition to practicing psychotherapy for the past 17 years, I served as clinical director for a prominent treatment program. I led a robust team of clinicians and staff, advanced program development, and designed and conducted regular trainings. I have tremendous pride in having been part of a top notch collaborative team that transformed lives.
Today, as the founder and owner of Wise Owl Counseling, I am an expert at helping clients recognize and remove barriers, improve communication, and get back in connection with themselves and each other.
